Sprockets are used to transmit power with the help of roller chain, where unidirectional rotation is essential and the distance of two rotational entities is adjustable. In other words, sprocket is a type of gear which can accommodate chain roller in it to rotate with the help of roller chain. The sprocket gives positive drive and as per applied load and speed ratio the teeth size is bigger or smaller. The common example is a bicycle where two sprockets are unidirectionally rotated be means of a roller chain.

Mainly 3 types of sprockets are used in industry. They are single strand, Duplex and triplex sprockets.

Single strand sprockets is used in low torque application. Only one roller chain is used to drive the sprockets as in bicycle. In light applications like conveyors, Simple machines etc these single stranded sprockets are used.

Duplex sprockets having two strands, is used in moderate applications. In some machines duplex sprockets are used with two roller chains. If any one roller chain breaks, then we can still run the machine with other roller chain for some time.

Triplex sprockets having three strands, is used with maximum 3 roller chains. This is used for heavy applications. If any one or two belts breaks for any reason, transmission doesn’t stop. It will continue for some time.
